Johan Betrom’s background in naval architecture started with a Shipbuilding Technician course in St Nazaire, home to the famous Chantier de l’atlantique shipyard. His passion for fast, light sailing lead him from St Nazaire to Southampton, where he spent 4 years; 3 years studying Yacht and Power craft design in the Southampton Institute, and a fourth to achieve a M.Sc. in Ocean Engineering at the Southampton University.
While completing his studies, Johan worked in several boatyards in Brittany, and also in Florida, in order to experience all aspects of boat construction. His experience in an ORMA60 Trimaran racing team gave him the chance to discover a taste of high tech yachts. After university, Johan joined VPLP, where he has collaborated on many prestigious projects for 3 years.
His passion for travel lead him to Australia where he worked for over 2 years with McConaghy boats. This unique experience gave him the key to fully understand the whole process of performance yacht construction. Combining all his experience, Johan has been lucky to be involved in almost all steps of yacht creation; from sketch through calculation, planning, build and launch.
